  • Can we get visitor visa on US_Canada border (POE)?

My father is visiting us in US on B2 visa. We are planning to visit Canada this sumer. I know he needs visitor visa for Canada. The question is that can he get that visa on border (POE)? Or should he get visa from NY or Buffalo Canadian consulate?

    Thanks for the guidance.

It has to be from the consulate. No visa is issued at the border.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.

The canadian visa needs to be obtained from the counsulate in US and not froym the border. Why don't you suggest your dad to apply for canadian visa from india itself before he flies to US....that would be easy and at the same time you will not have to run after the canadian embassy once ur fathere has reached US.

What does following mean? This is the text, I have copied form CIC document IMM 5256E of Sept-07.

        "Where Do I Apply?

You must submit your application to the Canadian visa office responsible for your area, for processing. Consult the relevant visa office or its Web site regarding accepted methods of submitting applications (for example, general mail, in person, by courier etc.).

Note: If you are from the United States, Greenland or St. Pierre and Miquelon, you can apply at a Canadian port of entry."

If you hold a green card or if you are a citizen of US, you basically do not need a visa to enter canada. In your case, i assume that your dad is from India and he is visiting US and you plan to travel to canada for visit. In such case he will need a visa, either issued from India or from Canadian counsulate in US

              No

Canada has stopped issuing visitor visas at the border and they'll turn you back. Once you're back at the US border, you'll be asked to go to their offices on the first floor of the building and take a special interview.

You need to get the visa in advance from their consulate, which can be at Buffalo or NYC etc.

              Good luck.
