Change of name in passport

I am a Indian citizen at present in Canada (student visa).
My first name is : xxxx
Last Name is: yyyythiyyy
but in the passport it was written as
first name: xxxxyyyyti
last name: yyy

So now i have to correct the first name and last name and also the misspelled last name.

So what should i do now do i need to apply for a new passport if so how much time does it take and what happens to the student stamp that was there in the old passport. Is there any other option or applying for the new passport is the only solution.

Please can anyone reply to this as soon as possible.

They can note an observation with the corrected FIRST and LAST name in the current passport without issuing a new passport.

I have a same problem with my First name and last name,
when I apply for renew my passport I sent my Indian Election card copy and explanation letter about First name and last name

- now on my new passport all problem are solved
