My boyfriend was planing on coming to Canada in August of 2009 for 3-6 months as that was the length of time we heard you were allowed to visit Canada. Obviously we did not have enough information before attempting this.
He planned to visit a school he was hoping to attend January of this year and also get aquainted with the area. He crossed at the Sarnia border and was denied saying He did not have enough money to do so. He was red flagged and after a big ordeal was sent home. A family member managed to speak with the officer who detained him and was told if he wanted to come back a week later with less luggage and a letter that he could try.
In October of that year he came by train from Chicago with a letter from my family saying he would be with us for thanksgiving and that we would see that he returns home at the end of the week. He was again detained and told he was not allowed to enter Canada and was sent home again!
Knowing that being a US citizen he could apply for a study permit at the Canadian border we decided to apply through the Detroit embassy so that when he arrived at the border they would have fewer reasons to send him home. I personally tried to contact the embassy as it says to do on the websites but they refuse to speak with you over the phone. I emailed the address they provide for inquiries but only received automated responses. All we wanted to do was confirm that we were following their rules correctly. I finally had my questions confirmed, or so I thought, by someone from the embassy only to have his application denied. We applied the second time only to receive a letter saying they had raised the Fee price by $10.00 and would have to be sent back yet again but other than that things seemed to be in order. Almost 28 days later He received a letter saying the required an interview so He drove 6 hours and booked a hotel only to have them deny his application yet again.
All He wants to do is be here for school. If we were trying to keep him here illegally we wouldn't have put out so much money trying to do things correctly.
At this point we don't know what to do. We plan on getting married in the next few years and trying to have him immigrate here is something I don't look forward to. I realize this is incredibly long but if anyone has ANY suggestions or information I would greatly appreciate it. We need all the help we can get!
What are the best ways to go about fixing this?
Is it easier to be married in the states and then immigrate here? or vice versa?
thank you SO much in advance!
