What does Police clearance consists of?

Hello I would like to know what does Police Clearance certificate consists of? Is it just a certificate and some kind of stamping in the passport? The reason for my asking is because my friend back in 1997 (in india) got into a feud which became physical, but he went to the police and surrended himself. So will this appear in the police certicate? Could this appear as a bad thing?

Any help or similar situation would help.

A police clearance consists of the police agencies in any country that you lived in for more than 6 months checking your backgorund and issuing a certificate to say if you have any criminal convictions.
If your freinds was charged with the crime then yes it will show up and yes it is very bad he will be criminally inadmissable to Canada. Unless he applied for a pardon which is costly and hard to get.
If he wasnts charged with a crime he needs to check with the local police agencies as to whether it will still be on his record.
