Hello and happy new year to all,
Can anyone offer advice or share any related experience on this issue?
A relative of mine received a conviction from his native country while he was there on a trip recently.
This is after he got his green card and is living in the US for the past 2 years.
He was arrested and convicted of being in possession of a tampered passport from that country.
(Sorry, I don't have all the details on how or what happened).
So it is not a US passport and the conviction was not in the US.
He had to pay a fine and did not receive any jail time.
And was given a new passport.
The maximum penalty was 10,000 US and 3 years in prison.
Would this foreign conviction jeopardize his green card in the US?
And does it qualify as a "Crime of Moral Turpitude" that is being referred to as grounds for deportation.
Would it affect his green card renewal?
If he waits 5 years and keeps a clean record in the US, will that foreign conviction affect his chances of becoming a US citizen? Will it be a grounds for denying his application?
Thanks for your help.
