EAD application in case visa expires in 3 months

Hello,

I am going to USA around 15th Decmeber,2012 along with my wife.I am having L1 visa & my wife has L2 visa,both the visas are expiring on 31st March,2012.

I want to apply EAD for my wife after reaching USA.Does our visa expiry date will affect EAD duration or we can get EAD for longer duration beyond our visa expiry(may be based on I-94).

Is it advisable to apply for EAD before visa extensions or may be based on I-94(in case it is more than visa expiry date).

Pls. share your experience on this.
