SSN for son

Hi we want to apply for our son's SSN who is a minor. We are waiting for our greencard and our priority date is october 2002. Can we apply for our son's SSN when we get our green card or wait for him to be an adult and get a job to get an SSN. Any advice will be appreciated. Our son is with special needs and doesnot qualify for some of the services as he doesnt have an SSN.

What is his legal status in US currently?

I am sure you would have included your son in your green card application. Therefore, when you get greencard, he will get it too. You can apply for his SSN after he receives his greencard. He does not have be 18 years old to get SSN.
