This isnt to sway anyone into using their AP cards that may have been on the fence about leaving the USA for travel, but I just wanted to share our experience recently when me and my wife went to the Dominican for vacation. We are currently waiting for approval for the green card so upon return we were very anxious to see how they would proceed using the AP. My wifes tourist visa is still current with time left, but she came here on a B2 when we married and we were worried this would be grounds for denial. However, at the immigration desk, the officer just made her finger print and take a photo, asked us where we were and then pointed her in the direction of the secondary screening. She was in and out within 10 minutes. The office was full too, so we expected it to take atleast 2 hours, (Like the last time she came to visit me before she came here permanently). However it was so quick going through immigration, it was such a breeze. She said they didnt even ask her anything in the secondary, just looked at everything and sent her on her way.
Successful vacation and happy my wife was able to return with me. Next we will go to Vegas for my birthday, however she will not need to go through customs so it will be easy. Hopefully soon her GC will arrive and we wont ever travel with the anxiety we had this go round.
** Just a note, using your AP card for re-entry is a risk that you have to be prepared to take. Not everyone has the same situation and may have had an overstay which may trigger more signs to immigration. SO proceed at your own risk and make sure you have nothing that would paint a red dot on you for re-entry.
