EAD/AP Combo Card Question

Hi everyone! Can anyone tell me if they have successfully traveled using the EAD/AP combo card? My husband received his a little over a month ago and we are considering taking a trip to see his father (he has not been back to his homeland in 9 years!). Our lawyer said if it is not an emergency than we should hold off, but I have heard of so many people traveling without any issues. We are in NYC where cases are taking at least a year so we really don't want to wait until he gets his actual GC.

PS - I posted a similar question on Avvo and a lawyer said the EAD does not qualify as a travel document. That is not true, right? The paper we received said it does so I'm not sure why the lawyer said that.
