How INS tracks the status change?

Here is my case..

I came to US on H1B and have valid stamping on my passport until July 2007(2nd renewal). I applied for I-140 and I-485 concurrently. I-140 got approved and I-485 pending(more than an year by now). Got EAD for myself and for my wife about 6 months ago.
Recently, along with my wife I started a LLC firm. I heard my status would have changed.
How does the INS tracks down the status change?
Is there a way to find about the status change?
