  • Travel questions on AoS for a family based GC petition in progress

My father recently spent 3 1/2 months in India on advance parole (I-131). He is returning to the US next week. He will present his passport and approval of I-131 (advance parole paper).

    1. When re-entering, does he need to show any documents that establish that he needed to travel? In his case, he had a family member that was sick.
    2. How long do they usually take to process at the port of entry? In other words, in how many hours after he lands, should we expect him to be cleared to be picked up at the airport?
    3. Any personal/family experiences with re-entering on I-131?

    Thank you

I took all my AOS documents just in case - all notices received from USCIS, a copy of my marriage certificate and a copy of my wife's US passport. I didn't need any of it - I just gave the lady at immigration desk my passport and combo card. I would probably take them all with me again though, just to be sure.

I know this differs by aiport. My entry at Fort Lauderdale airport was VERY quick - I was in the secondary screening room for all of three minutes before they cleared me. I've heard that this can be longer at busy airports like LAX or Chicago though.

I posted this on a different post, but here was mine from the weekend:

I used my Advanced Parole for the first time to enter the US at Fort Lauderdale airport on Saturday and it was a really good experience. I got to the counter and gave the lady my passport and combo card. She asked me where I had been on the trip (it was back to my home country for a week), and then asked me to give one set of right hand fingerprints and have a photo taken. She then took me to the secondary processing room (which I was expecting). There was one other person waiting in the room. I sat down for about three minutes before they called my name, gave me my stamped passport back and wished me a good day. No further questions or anything. It was super quick and pain free - I was walking out of the airport with my luggage 20 minutes after landing!

I also had no problems checking into my flight or boarding. I had read online that sometimes they don't know what Advanced Parole is or don't want to let you board. I gave them my combo card and they had no issues at all.

We traveled twice since getting our AP in April - both times they just asked where we went and why and didn't go any further

      2. How long do they usually take to process at the port of entry? In other words, in how many hours after he lands, should we expect him to be cleared to be picked up at the airport?

Depends, we came though Chicago and each time was over a hour before we were even called

      3. Any personal/family experiences with re-entering on I-131?

Chicago stops everyone, even with a GC. We traveled together and they really did not ask too many questions but we overheard some people really getting questioned with questionable circumstances

Thanks. My father was able to enter without any issues at LAX. It did take about 1 hour, but no issues... Usual expected and fair questions.
Thanks all for the comments on my questions.

I just came back from my trip to Costa Rica, 17 days. I didn't have any problem at CR airport as they scan the card as it was a green card. On the fortlauderdale airport I couldn't use the machines so the lady told me to go straight forwards with the officer. He just asked me if i haven't received the GC yet and then walked with me thru the secondary inspection room where I just spent 3 minutes till they stamp my passport with a Parole! Everybody were really friendly and respectful! Very nice experience using my Advance Parole
