EAD renewal - crossed the timeline

Hi,
My EAD is getting expired in another 45 days. I overlooked at renewal time and now I have come to know that EAD renewal should be applied in 6 months prior to the expiration date or atleast 90 days. Can you tell me what all complications can come if I apply now and any suggestions ...?

I'm not aware of any such rule...........you can apply for a renewal even after it has expired.

As I said my EAD expires in 45 days, what happens if I apply now and my EAD processing takes more than 45 days? Because inorder to get interim temporary EAD from local INS office, we have to wait minimum 90 days from the date of applying. Will I go into illegal status after 45 days ? or do I need to stop working for the remaining 45 days till I get interim EAD or EAD?
