EAD for unpaid position?

Hello

Can I use EAD for an unpaid research opportunity? I have been told by the University officials that unpaid position for research is not possible, when I use my EAD. They said that this research position has to be paid , but the department is not willing to fund this position.I would like to know how I can take up this offer and if there are any other options. Can't EAD be used when its an unpaid position? Please suggest if anyone has an answer to my issue. Thanks for your time.

if it is an unpaid position, you are not being employed, but act as a volunteer, you do not need work authorization.

Thanks for the reply..As this is in a university, it is called a research fellowship. But the position is basically not funded. They said that they can sponsor J1 visa for a non funded position but cannot allow me to work on EAD. Is there any website/document which I could show to them, so that I won't miss this opprtunity? Thanks for your help.
