  • L2 1-765 and SSN

    Hi,

I was a student in the US a few years ago and still am in possession of my SS Card in my maiden name.

I am currently on L2 visa and I have received my approved I-765. I also have a job offer in hand. But my passport and I-765 show my married name. I would like to know:

    a) Can I use my old SSN with the maiden name
    b) If I have to change my name on the SSN, can I start working only when the name change on SSN happens?
    c) How long does it typically take for a name change on the SSN?

    Yes, but you should not.
    b) If I have to change my name on the SSN, can I start working only when the name change on SSN happens?
You can start working, since the number won't change, but your really should change your name, by going to the SSA office and applying for the new name change on the card. You will need passport, EAD card and the marriage certificate.
    c) How long does it typically take for a name change on the SSN?
    4-6 weeks.
