EAD/AP vs H1B

I got two questions about changing from H1B to EAD/AP

My I-140 was approved based on EB1 (may 2007), my current H1B will expire in January 2009.
I applied to adjustment of status (I-485) in April 2008 and EAD/AP are still in process.
My current employer will not renew my H1B.

Is it necessary to renew my H1B or Can I work using my EAD/AP without renewing my H1B after expired?

The main question is, can I work during the green card process using only EAD/AP without having a H1B visa.

Yes, you can work using EAD after H1b expires. Otherwise, what is the point of applying and USCIS giving EADs?
