I returned from India on Jan 24, 2009 using my AP for the first time and would like to share my experience. It was relatively smooth this time compared to my past 2 experiences. I took Emirates and when asked for visa, I showed my AP both in India & Dubai and they did not ask for any other documents.
I am currently working on EAD and my AP was expiring on Jan 27, 2009, just three days after my scheduled arrival. (So, it is fine to travel and arrive just before the expiry of your AP) I have applied for my AP renewal and is still pending even though it has been over 3 months since I filed the renewal.
When I arrived at the San Francisco airport, they initially took the finger prints & photo and asked me to go to the Secondary screening room. There the CBP officer asked for both the original AP documents with the passport and asked me to wait. Surprisingly, there were quite a few people on that day for the secondary screening. It took about 25-30 minutes for the officer to get to my case and he then took about 10-15 minutes for processing and called me and handed one of the AP documents that was stamped. He kept the other original. No other documents were asked.
I carried the following documents:
1. Two original AP docs
2. I-485
3. I-140
4. Employment verification letter
5. Bank statements
6. Pay stubs
7. Last two years W2 copies
I wish you all good luck.
