I just received my combo card and want to visit my family abroad. How long can I safely stay outside the US and how often can I travel if my card expires in one year?

You can travel any time during the valid period of your EAD.
It is taking a long time for EAD renewals, so you may want to plan for that if your case is going to take more than 1 year. The 180-day extension is not enough for many cases (better to renew 6 months before expiration).Nov 2018 - Package sent - EB - Texas Service Center
