EAD extension when visa is expiring soon

Hello,
I have a EAD on my L2.
My EAD expires in April 2011 and my L2 visa expires in July 2011.
My questions are:
1) If I apply for EAD renewal right now, what could happen in my case- Will I get a new EAD card valid only from April till July?
2) Do I apply for EAD renewal, only after applying for extension of L2?
(Since I am not exactly sure how early we should start our visa extension process - but I know that I will have to apply for EAD renewal 3-4 months before expiry, that is around Jan11. Will this be too soon for applying for extension of visa?)

The L1 and L2 needs to be extended first or the EAD application needs to be filed with the proof of extension filing/approval.
