Does EAD renewal needs employment?

My EAD is expiring in Jun 2012. I'm currently employed. My employer is going to renew it hopefully.

I am applying for a mortgage loan and the bank is asking for future job guarantee. Here is the email they sent.

I have one more thing to collect from you please. Because you have less than a year left on your visa we are asking you to get a letter from your employer stating that he will file to renew your visa again prior to its expiration. He needs to indicate there is an expectation of continued employment. As you have been with the company for 10 years that shouldn't be a problem .
You application is presently under FHA review. It also need residency review and can't be completed until we get this employer letter.

Questions:
1. Does EAD renewal requires employment? If I lose my job can I still renew my EAD myself?
2. Is it legal for a bank to ask for future job guarantee?

2. They can ask whatever they feel reasonable for the safety of their money.
