Additional income on H1

Hi,
I have been working on H1B for the last 2 years.
I understand that I can work for only 1 employer on 1 H1B, however can I take up an alternate source of income (e.g. online surverys) where I am issued a 1099 at the end of the year versus a W2 and I am not an employee but an independent contractor?

yes, you can sign up for surveys, etc. just add those 1099s while filing your taxes.
