Employer applying for GC but I am already in 6th year

Hi,

My H1 expires in July 2013. My employer has initiated the green process but I am not sure how long it takes before I can get an extension on my H1. Can anyone please let me know my options if I don't get an extension before my H1 expires? Can I go back to my home country in June 2013 and work from home until I-485 is approved?

Any reply will be greatly appreciated.
