travel question with 485 pending!!

i have my approved i 140 and i 485 pending,i and my wife have eads but none of us has used it.my question is can i travel to india(outside usa)for about 6 to 8 months.i know this is not a very healthy step in green card processing but this is a family problem.what if my wife travel for like 8 months(she also has her I 485 pending) and i travel for 4 months?what would be the status then?
