Green card EAD and H1B status

Hello,

I would like to know if I can maintain both H1B status and apply/keep EAD card applied along with the I-485. In my case, my H1B is cap-exempt, so, right now I work at a University, but I would like to keep my job prospects open, and if I get an offer from Industry, I would like to use the green card EAD to move to the new job. Any suggestions and ideas are welcome. I am relatively new to the green card process.
