Applying for Green card, family in India

I am on L1A visa since last one year in the US. My wife and kids took L2 visa along with me one year back, however they did not travel with me to the US due to domestic issues.

Now my company is sponsoring me for Green card. Can I apply for greencard for my family as well while they are in India or do they need to come here and apply for everyone ? If they need to come here then do they need to wait for their social security # to come to apply ? Please advise.
