  • L1A to Green Card; tax implications of GC

    Hi All,

I am currently on a L1A expiring June 2014. My employer has agreed to sponsor my GC, however suggested that I consider the tax implications before they start the process. I am a Canadian Citizen, born in India so I pay taxes in all 3 countries (nominal amounts in Canada & India). I read on the net that US Green Card holders are taxed on their 'worldwide income' but as both India and Canada have tax treaties with the US, the impact should be minimal, correct?

Would appreaciate hearing from someone who has gone through this.

    Thanks/Regards.

Basically, you would end up paying the highest tax bracket of all 3 counties on your worldwide income.

That is, if US rate is 25%, India rate is 30%, and Canada rate is 35%, you will basically be paying 35%.
