  • Which visa...Uk citizen to Usa. Unmarried at the moment

Hi, i've registered today as some of the websites i've viewed are just simply a bit scary!

I am a uk citizen and my partner a US citizen. As yet we are unmarried and yet to get engaged but it is a certainty.
We've been together 2 years and he is in the better job and based in OH.

My question is on visas. Obviously I have an ESTA and travel on that for now. The next stage i'm considering is to quit my job and use my savings to have a year out there to experience more of the US and potentially work? (Is this allowed?)

I dont think i could afford a year out on any kind of travel visa as i'd need to earn some money? My other option i need to look into is study, i haven't been to university so work visas with sponsorship is not an option but if work isn't an option could i study on a year out?

All being well, i'll love it, embrace driving on the wrong side and want to stay permanently so we will marry during all this but probably in the UK as thats what we want. Has anyone had a year out on any kind of visa to build on their relationship then gone for the greencard after marriage option?

All the immigration sites dont seem to have a help line for any kind of general advice! I dont want to apply for one kind of visa if it will jeopardise the next visa?

Your fiancee can file a K1 fiancee visa for you. Upon entering US you have to get married within months otherwise you have to leave. Within his time you will hopefully be able to decide if you want to marry him or not.

The US doesn't really have a visa category like that. You can google WORKING HOLIDAY USA and might get a few options through various agencies, but nothing like what you can do on an Australian working holiday visa, for example.

The K1 won't work if you want to marry in the UK. With a B2 visa, you'll get 6 months upon entry instead of only 90 days, and you can essentially ask for another 6 months, but you can't work, and chances of approval for the extension are low. There's work under the table at 7-Elevens and other little shops, and also in construction, but of course, I can't condone that work here.

Finally, as student visa would help too, but studying without financial aid would set you back pretty far, so I doubt that's an option for you. You can work part time at university, but it'll get you a basic income.

Best bet? Marry first and then apply to immigrate.
