  • marriage without establishing residence

    Hello,

I'm a French citizen. I have known my boyfriend for 3 years, and we plan to get married. My question is that, is it better for us to get married in France, or in New York, or both? How could I be entitled to receive a green card? How long will the process take? And - could I actually obtain one at all, and keep it, even if I continue to work in France? My boyfriend is now based in the States, but he could move to France.

    Thanks in advance

You can marry anywhere. If you don't intend to live in the US at this time there is no need to get the GC because you might just forfeit it by living abroad for long periods.

Thank you very for your response. May I ask how many, numerous people actually receive their green cards, and live abroad for extended periods and decades while retaining their permanent resident status? Are they committing fraud? Thank you

I don't know the numbers. You're not committing fraud but if you lose the GC it might be hard to get another one, and of course it's a waste of time and money.
