  • Obtaining Police Certificates

    Hello -

The website (/police-certificates-for-usa-immigrant-visa/) states that police report is required from the Passport Office and the District Police Office.

My wife has lived in two separate cities (Kolkata and Bengaluru) since she was 16 yrs. Is a police report required from each of the TWO cities or just the current residing city, which is Bengaluru.

    Appreciate the clarification.

    Thanks!

Since this is an India-specific passport requirement, you'll have to use your judgment. My advice, if there is any doubt, is to obtain police clearances from both locations. A literal interpretation of the requirement you cite would be to obtain police clearances from every jurisdiction in which she has lived for a "reasonable" period of time since age 16. "Reasonable" period of time is generally interpreted as "six months."

Additional questions regarding obtaining police certificate.

      1) We are currently waiting for NVC notice. Can we start the process of obtaining the police certificate now? If we get it too early, then it may expire by the time of the interview. However, if we get it too late, this document can delay the timely submittal to NVC.

      2) Can we submit the NVC package without the police certificate and notify NVC that we will bring it in during the interview.

      3) We are doing the police certificate from Bengaluru, India. Is name change and/or addition of spouse name on passport required before the passport office or the district police office will give out the police certificate?

      Appreciate the help.

The police clearances are needed for the NVC civil document submittal, not for your embassy (or consulate) interview.

If you submit the NVC package without the police clearances, they will come back and ask you for them before they complete the NVC processing.

Request the clearances in both maiden and married names.
