Hello all

My mother and father have already been to their interview and will be coming to the US in August. They have their sealed envelope and are ready to come here but the only question I have is this. Does the sealed envelope have their birth certificates that they submitted prior to the interview or will they need to get their certified birth certificates again? I am asking this because I want them to get their SSN as soon as they arrive so that I can process them as my dependents for Army purpose. I am in the Army and I want to make sure I can provide for my parents well being and I can do this by putting them on my insurance.

They don't need their birth certificates to apply for the SSN.
They only will be needing the passport with US visa on it.

The SSN's are applied for immigrants automatically by your completion of the DS-260 form. Normally, the SSN shows up at the address of parents' destination about a month after their arrival on IR-5 visas.
