  • Questions concerning i-864, address, back taxes, and supporting documents

    Hi,

I'm new here and am looking for some advice.

My wife and I are working our way through the visa process right now. We are in Phase IV and trying to figure out what we need to prepare, and I have a few questions.

First of all, I didn't do my taxes for the 2012 earning year because I was abroad that whole year and submitted my 1040ES instead. The IRS says that if you make less than ten grand you don't need to file if you're living abroad which is true. I had made closer to eight. Is it worthwhile submitting a 1040EZ now even though it wouldn't be ready in time for the visa interview? Or should I submit four years of taxes to make up for the missing year? Or neither? Or what? I should also point out that I have no W2 for this job, it being China, and it's uncertain whether the school would really be willing to write me a letter of employment. I haven't worked there in over a year, and this IS China. I don't know if that makes a difference.

Another question is, my wife says I need to submit a handwritten statement of the relationship. Is there a particular way I should do this? Is this just a brief document announcing when we met, or is this a heartfelt telling of the whole relationship? Is it truly necessary at this stage? I already submitted the "story of our relationship" when we submitted our i-130.

My last question is that we put our address in America as my father's address in California, but it looks like I got my old job back in Boston---not a hundred percent. I'll know in a week---but if I DID get my job back, should I get a letter of employment from them to prove that my stay in China is temporary? I do not have a Boston address as of yet, so... I don't know what to do there. What do you guys recommend? The California address has been on all paperwork up until now as my American residence, as it's the closest thing to a permanent residence that I have.

Any case. Any advice would be welcome.

    Yours,
    Gabe
