re-entry permit from India

My parents(GC holders) have gone to India on a visit. They have to come back to US by December(6-month period). They cannot come here for another 3-4 months min. due to family emergency. They haven't applied for re-entry permit as they planned to come back within 6 months. Is it possible to apply for re-entry permit from India. I see that the requirement is to apply for re-entry before the travel. If this is the case, how can they extend their stay without loosing GC.

You can't apply for re-entry permit from India.
