  • I-130 - name change question

I've Americanized my name many years ago since receiving my citizenship, so my first name is different on my naturalization certificate/passport than other documents. Do I need to get a court order legally changing my name to submit I-130 for my spouse? I always thought its obvious I am the same person (especially since both my original and the Americanized first name start with the same letter) and I've been using the Americanized version for years without any problems. My concern is that Form I-130 instructions say: If either you or the person you are filing for is using a name other than that shown on the relevant documents, you must file your petition with copies of the legal documents that effected the change, such as a marriage certificate, adoption decree, or a court order."

Thank you in advance for any input.

Your name has already been legally changed with the Naturalization Certificate. Include a copy of that document with your I-130.

Submit the I-130 with your Naturalization Certificate name. If you have other legal documents (driver's license, etc.) with a more recent name change, what proof of your right to use that new name did you have to provide?

Per the instructions, don't i need to provide a court order officially approving my right to use the new name on the driver's license, etc?
