I understand that with a conditional green card the recipient needs to stay in the USA for a minimum of 181 days a year. Does this rule also apply to unconditional green cards?

There is no such rule for a specific period of time, in or outside the U.S. If a reentering Green Card holder is found to have returned at least twice after being out of the U.S. six months or more, he might be advised to get a Reentry Permit before staying out of the U.S. for extended periods of time in the future.
