  • Simultaneous application for Canadian PR and US green card?

    Hello,

I am from India and just finished my studies in Canada few months ago and going to receive my work permit this week. Also, I am going to apply for PR through Ontario Masters Graduate Provincial Nomination Program early next year.

My father has been working in the U.S. since 10 years and just received U.S. citizenship. He wants to apply for my Green card too now which would take 7+ years in processing time. I'm not really keen on getting the U.S. green card as I intend to settle in Canada and not U.S. but I don't see much harm in filing the application anyway. Maybe 7 years down the line, I might not like Canada as much and wish to work/settle in U.S. which would be difficult without a Green card. After 7 years, I can decide which one to keep and which one to surrender (as I've read that it's difficult to maintain residency in both countries simultaneously as Canadian PR requires 2/5 years and US requires 6/12 mos every year).

My only concern is will there be any problem with my Canadian PR application if they come to know that I have a U.S. greencard application filed alongside? Will there be problems visiting U.S. in these 7 years, etc.?

I only want the U.S. GC to be able to have a CHOICE after 7 years which country I want to stay/work in.

    Thanks for the responses.

    Hi,

I had two simultaneous applications at some point of time and didn't have any problem. My mother applied for US immigration (F3) for me and my family in March 2005 and we applied for our Canadian immigration in April 2008 under the FSW program. We received Canadian immigration and came here in Toronto in May 2010. We still have our US greencard application active. In the meantime we became Canadian citizens. So I believe it doesn't matter. Good luck!!
