I will be marrying a U.S. citizen this year and applying for a green card (I entered the U.S. with an F1 visa which is still valid). We've been together for over a year but have kept our finances separate, because he has debt and a poor credit history -- in fact, he will be filing for bankruptcy in the next month or two. I have no debt so we are waiting for the bankruptcy to be done and for him to rebuild his credit a bit before we get married.
For these reasons, I worry that we won't have any evidence of joint finances, joint tax returns, joint property/assets, etc. Will this give the impression that our marriage is not real? Or will we be ok as long as we provide plenty of other evidence (which we have) and an explanation regarding our finances? I was thinking maybe we could use his bankruptcy documents as proof for why we've kept that part of our lives separate.
(Oh, and he WILL be able to sponsor me financially, since the issue is not his current income, but his previous debt. If necessary we also have other people willing to act as co-sponsors on the affidavit of support).
Any advice on our situation would be appreciated!
