  • Wife lied on her green card about her marital status

Sponsored my wife from Canada two years ago. She was in India at that time. Last year she received her green card through her parents and moved to US. We havent started living together as I was waiting for the canadian immigration to give her the papers. Anyways, my wife put her marital status as Single in green card in order to attain it, otherwise she wouldve not received the card. What are the outcomes of misrepresenting? Is it a big deal? Does US govt really care? We havent lived together, but I am legally married to her in Canadian and Indian papers.

    Any help with be appreciated

Use of an immigrant visa without updating application record with correct marital status is a VERY BIG DEAL, because it may result in a significant advantage in obtaining a visa. If discovered by USCIS, it will result in a deportation threat. The rationale for dealing harshly with this type of visa is twofold: 1) it enabled your wife to "jump ahead" and gain an immigration advantage for which she was not entitled; and 2) she perjured herself on application forms.

This is likely to come up in the future (if not sooner) when she applied for Naturalization, at which time all prior casework is reviewed.
