  • Post interview travel to US and return to home country

My wife and I live outside of the US, and she has her embassy interview soon (CR1 category spouse visa). Assuming she gets approved, and gets her packet, are we able to travel to the US to validate her immigrant visa, return to the country where we both live?

Our plan is to eventually move to the US early next year, I just want to make sure we can travel to the US before moving, without getting stuck there.

    Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

We are planning exactly the same. We are in Toronto and plan to drive to US just to to validate our visa. In fact couple of our friends has done the same and they never had any problem.

Thanks! I got a response from the Embassy as well:

The visa will have the medical report validity that can be up to 6 months. Once she enters the USA with the immigrant visa and receive a stamp in her passport, the visa will be valid for one year (upon endorsement).
So, it appears that if you go within the first 6 month window and validate the immigrant visa, you have an additional one year window to move to the US.
