  • Bringing parents and siblings to USA

    hello everyone!

I've been lurking around on this forum for quite some time as I was getting ready for my naturalization, I had my interview today and was submitted for approval, i hope my oath date comes in the mail soon!!

I have plans to request for my mother to come live in the US, and from what I can see, the petition to bring a parent is pretty fast, so I'm glad for that.
however I've been seeing that for my siblings to be able to be granted entry to USA it takes around 7 years? I know that it would take longer if I try to petition them, so I will leave that to my mother once she is here.

my brother turned 18 a few days ago (jan 22) does his age matter then petitioning him? would the wait be longer once he is over 20?

I'm sorry that my words seem to be all over the place, I guess my question is... what are your experiences with your parents bringing your siblings into the country? how long was the average wait? will my sibling's age affect the wait time?
hearing anything from your experiences or knowledge would help, thank you so much!

Yes, the wait in the siblings (F4) category is about 13 years (13.5 for people born in India, 19.5 for people born in Mexico, and 23.5 for people born in the Philippines), so if they are unmarried, the unmarried 21-or-over child of permanent resident (F2B) category is faster unless they're born in Mexico, as the wait is about 6.5 years (21+ for people born in Mexico and almost 11 for people born in the Philippines). But it would be a good idea to have you and your mom both petition the siblings just in case (multiple people can petition the same person), as you never know if something unexpected may happen with your mother.

Note that the siblings would have to remain unmarried, as permanent residents cannot petition married children. (After your mother becomes a citizen, them marrying wouldn't kill the petition, but it would move to a slower category.)

An unmarried under-21 child of a permanent resident would be in the F2A category, which has a wait of around 1.5 years. So there's a good chance that your brother who's 18 now may be able to immigrate under F2A before he ages out.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
