  • Dual Citizenship US and Canada

It appears that a Canadian can have dual citizenship with the US. However, I'm not finding any concrete information regarding a US citizen holding Canadian citizenship.

I know someone who is about to have their N-400 interview, who is a Canadian, who is getting a bit nervous about the US not allowing dual citizenship with Canada.

If you are knowledgeable about this, please give some information and perhaps government related links which will confirm that neither country has an issue with a US Citizen holding Canadian citizenship and visa versa.

    Thank you.

The US does not care about the existence of other nationalities of a US citizen. In particular, one does not lose US citizenship upon acquiring another nationality (unless the person wants to lose it), and one is not asked to renounce existing nationalities as a precondition of naturalization. Same with Canada.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Since the U.S. naturalization oath requires the applicant to renounce allegiance to foreign governments ("...renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state...", this renunciation is interpreted differently from one authority to another. The Philippines considers it a formal renunciation of one's Filipino citizenship and newly-naturalized American citizens must pay $50 and take an oath at a Philippine Consulate to legally regain Philippine citizenship. Russia has very strict requirement for new American citizens to regain Russian citizenship and thus enjoy dual citizenship.

Generally, however, as newacct posted, it's not a big deal for Canadians or Americans to retain citizenship in both countries.

But I though Philippine citizenship was already automatically lost upon naturalizing in a foreign country. So the oath doesn't matter -- even if there wasn't an oath it would be the same. I don't know of a country for which the oath makes a difference.

I have heard, or dug deep in ot this forum, that US does not care about one having multiple citizenships. Can you verify? I migrated to Canada and have native contry's (they allow multiple citizenships) citizenship, and also Canadian. Now my US immigration is here, how can I proceed with US application DS-261 & DS-260?

            Thanks!

Yes, the US definitely does not care about the existence of your other nationalities. You should have all three nationalities if you naturalize in the US. But if you are just immigrating to the US, naturalization is still many years down the road.
