  • American Sponsoring Nigerian Parent

I am in the process of filing a form I-130 for my parent and hoping some of my questions could be answered here.

I am a US Citizen and going to file for my Nigerian parent who is currently a refugee in Canada. Does anyone know how i can go about this and if there are any additional steps i should take?

Also, does she have to go back to her home country to process the visa application or can she remain in Canada while i file for her?

Finally, does anyone know how long the process will take?

    Thanks in advance

It takes 10 to 16 months

Yes you can file for your parents.
They won't need to go back to Nigeria if they have legal status in Canada.
You will need to prove that you make enough money to take care of them when they move to the US.
The whole process depends on the state where you live.
In general , it takes 10 to 16 months. But it can be longer depending on the case.
Make sure you submit all the paperwork and additional documents required on the I-130
