  • Question about I-864 joint sponsor with assets and no income

Currently preparing I-864 and looking for some advice! I'm petitioning for my wife.

I am a full-time law student and currently not employed. I last worked from July '15 to July '16 making about 20k per year and have tax returns for 2016 & 2015 (each showing income ~10k since I only worked half the year). I plan on attaching a letter explaining that I was in school and not working during 2014 which is why I don't have a return for that year. But like I said, no job at the moment either. Wife is in school as well.

My mother has agreed to be a joint sponsor, but she is unemployed/has no income. However, she has assets (savings, investments, etc.) well over 100k and wanted to use that to meet the requirements.

My household is just myself and my wife. My mother's household includes herself and my younger brother.

Minimum requirement for household of 2 is $20,300, so I would need to make that amount or more in income or have 3x that in assets.
Since I do not have either, I believe that my mother has to prove in assets 5x the income requirement for her household of 2 PLUS my wife (meaning 3 members at the $25,525 requirement). Is this correct? I'm just trying to pinpoint an exact number so I can be sure.

Also, is using a joint sponsor with only assets plausible?

If not, I'm considering looking for part time employment that will get my income over the $20,300 limit and make things much simpler... I'm just not sure how long it will take to secure something and I wanted to get our application sent out by the end of the summer!

This is really the only complicated part of our application and I've been stressing over it the last few weeks.
Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
