  • GC for Mom

    Hello all,
I am new to this forum...been in the US for past 25 years and have citizenship since almost 20 years. My only brother is also a US citizen . Our mom lives in India and visits us almost every year. Inspite of trying very hard to persuade her to let us apply for her GC, we were unable to convince her. Now with the new Family Immigration things Trump is proposing.. I am really getting very worried. My mother is about 74 years old although health is ok now...I am just worried that once she get older and if she doesn't get her GC how will we manage...you know how some of us are the sandwich generation...can't leave our kids cant leave our parents....

Just wanted to get a feel of what you all think? Do you think the law may pass? She has right now gone back to India. Should I call her back and apply for GC immediately? So very confused....

I get your point exactly, since this is what I went through very recently and my sis and I made them agree for now!

    The tactics I used:

1.) Tell them consider it a new phase in life.
2.) Gave examples of other relatives who got their parent GC, got citizenship and returned back to India for longer periods.
3.) Not sure which state you are in but in CA (and probably some other states) state medical programs are a very good cover in addition to Federal and private insurance.
4.) It is not onerous as it may seem... gave some encouraging real life situational examples.
5.) Say things are not immediate it will take another 7 months or so for the first stage... so take your time, but we need to start the process and get things in hand (I-130 !) with at least the first stage with a possible change in law (I absolutely don't think it would happen in 2018). That buys you time to negotiate/convince/cajole to move ahead with the NVC process or perhaps I-1485

My parents and in-law ~70/70+ are active with things to do on India and pretty healthy but we don't want to get into the time when their health starts deteriorating and we aren't there with them.

PM me if you feel like
