  • Green Card Through Marriage

    Hi all,
I'm on F-1 OPT Visa, filing for my opt stem extension in next 2 days, I'm about to get married to my boyfriend who is Permanent residence. We're not hiring any lawyers to walk us through the process of filing it. I want to know the very first step to start the process. I have read few threads here, from what I have understood my spouse need to file I-130 form, Just that form is enough or it needs additional document?. If it needs, may I know what are they. I will appreciate any help, as I'm so confuse with this process. I don't want to lose my work status and go out of status, want to make sure each step before sending anything to USCIS
    Thanks

    It?s very complicated

    Hi!

I got married with a US citizen and what we did the first time is getting a lawyer. This process is very long and exhausting, you should do everything so comprehensively and send your package with no problems. Otherwise you get RFE?s or you might have to wait more, that?s why I would recommend you to hire a lawyer. This is my personal opinion. They do most of the things in the process, they send the package, they put all the papers together and help you guys to fill them. That?s why they make it much easier and bearable, otherwise you might have to start counting your process with a little wrong information.

This doesn?t mean you are not capable to do that, I meant it makes the process much easier. You don?t have to worry about the forms or other stuff. Of course there are tons of people filing the form without lawyers, that?s what I wanted to do but then I changed my mind and hired a lawyer just because not to do anything wrong. Also this doesn?t mean lawyers don?t do anything wrong 😂 but you both guys have to check every detail and information and try to send the package with no mistakes.

Good luck you both and I hope you get the best results with no waiting more than usual 😊
