  • How do you put a child in school in the USA?

My stepson will complete his midterm exams next week (eighth grade). He will then go to an "English Boot Camp", then to "Computer Camp" (at the advice of his schoolmaster in Burma).

My wife will fly to Burma and pick him up next February.

I assume he can go directly in high school here in the USA. From what I hear, he will likely be way ahead of all the American kids in eighth grade.

I have no children. He has never lived with us. We are both 52, and know nothing about putting a child in school. How do we know the process?

Note that 8th grade is usually in middle school, not high school.

Public school or private school? For public school, find the local school district whose boundaries your address is in (for example, you can use this site, enter your address, find its school district that covers the grade he is entering (some places have separate primary school and secondary school districts)), and then go to the school district's website to see how to enroll.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Thank you for your answer. I was wondering about a charter school (non-religious). How does that work?

I guess I can check prices on private school. I am not sure if that is within our budget. I rather him not go to public school. Public school was a "war zone" when I grew up here, and I rather he not experience the routine violence that I had to experience.

This is strictly an opinion and should not be misconstrued as legal advice. The use of this information is strictly at your own risk.

He is a citizen of Burma (Myanmar), like his mother. He has never been to the USA. We have only taken him to Singapore so far. He knows nothing of USA culture except what he learned from me.

          I am the USC.

FYI , Charter schools are also public. Biggest misconception today. Whew ! Charter schools are a little bit more restricted with their non DOE curriculum. Charter Schools also get funding from non government organizations. You
Can find private schools that are (non religious) you can also find private schools that are not crazy expensive.

            All the best!

I hope we?re not implying that his citizenship has anything to do with him entering school.

              Thank you!

I realize that a charter school is also public, but I am told the classes tend to be smaller.

I went to public school. It was a "war zone" but the school faculty ignored it like as though it was not happening. I frequently came home with ripped clothing, black eyes, etc. I am 52, so that was 30 years ago. It can only have gotten worse since then.

He is accustom to a very disciplined school environment, yet just like me, he has managed to get into fights. He is pre-occupied with pretty girls. I was the same at his age. So far he is following in my footsteps.

I will look into a private school. Last I knew most are Christian. Our family is Buddhist. I rather the school avoid such topics.

What school options is best for scholarships?
