  • Can I sponsor green card for my father in law ?

This site is very useful and provides wealth of information for visa seekers and sponsors. I would be a US citizen soon. I would like to know if I can sponsor my father in law for green card ? My wife is pursuing her education and is not employed yet. My understanding is that only employed can sponsor for immediate family members. Any help is highly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

No you cannot file for your FIL's green card. He is your wife's immediate relative and not yours. If your wife is a citizen, she can sponsor her father
even if she is not employed. You can be a joint sponsor of income for the
affidavit of support. Consult a competent immigration attorney for joint sponsorship of income or visit
the USCIS website for more details. www.uscis.gov
