Procedure for PR

In the case of a sister sponsored migration, what is the procedure after we land in USA ? How long do we have to stay there until we receive the Green Card and the Social security number ? Due to unavoidable circumstances I may have to come back after obtaining the PR. What is the period one can stay out of USA after getting the PR ?

Can somebody please help on this issue ?
