  • Medicare Benefits after GC for Parents

    Hi All,
I am a US citizen and about to file GC for my parents. This way they can come and stay with me. I heard that it will take a year to get them the card.

I was wondering what the rules are regarding the medical benefits once they get there greencard.

Does the state provides it ?
How others are taking care of this issue ?
Is everyone buying there own insurance and if yes, how does it work.
Any advice will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jats

Medicare is only for US Cistizen. So, even if thier PR is approved, they won't be able to apply for Medicare. If you are in California, check Medi-Cal. There are some conditions for a PR to be eligible - age, finance, etc. While waiting or the case to be approved, there is only travel insurance up to 6 months.

So Visitors Insurance is only available for 6 months? Reading here it takes 5 years to receive Medi-Cal that can't seem right? My Mom brings in about $14K a year on a pension but my salary is CA median. Are her benefits affected by my income even though it's for her? I guess I should call Medi-Cal and ask?

          Insurance

No, "visitor's insurance" is not just available for 6 months. Plans for new immigrants, visitors, travelers, have many different options and length of time that they can be purchased. You can call medical to find out what the time frame is but if you are sponsoring her and she is living with you then in most cases it will also be based on your information combined with hers.

In the meantime you can have her insured with new immigrant insurance. contact Insubuy for more information on the insurance and the options they have for new immigrants.
This is my opinion not legal advice.

Hello Jats, in regards to Social Security Benefits they are not available to your parents. If your parents worked and lived here in the US as Permanent Residents they are eligible for both SS and medicare benefits provided they paid into the system for 40 quarters, appx. 10 years. They would be elible for early retirement at age 62 and full benefits at age 65
If they become Permanent residents they are eligible under the Affordable Care Act for medical insurance.
