GC for parents of a USC

Hello! My friend is a USC and her parents came to the US with a visitor visa. After that they had been on H1B for several years. but now they do not have any status. Can my friend still get them a GC? or they need to be here legally? If somebody had a similar situation, please answer!

It may be difficult once you are illegal but you need to talk to a good attorney to make sure and if there are any waivers available.
