My mother is a permanent resident. She was living in the US before travelling to her home country to take care of her sister who was ill. She has been absent for 2 years without a reentry permit. Now her sister has passed away and she want to come back to the US. Will she have trouble to get admitted at the airport and what does she need to do? Does the immigration record departure dates for Green card holders?

Your mother has to get a reentry permit to go back US after 2 yrs travelling out.
Don't try to go back without reentry permit because she will get into troubles even deportation.
She should make appointment to see the US Embassy Officer in her country and maybe they can help her.
