  • Mantoux test... positive...

HI everyone... just wanted to find out whether anyone has any experience with how AOS will be affected by a positive Mantoux TB test... My husband had this test done and it came back positive... The Dr. is suggesting for him to follow up with some type of 6-9 months treatment. I haven't actually read the document this is just what he is telling me over the phone...

Has anyone gone throught this treatment? I read that it is a type of preventative chemotherapy... I am a little concerned about the side affects of this and if it is really necessary (even though it is called for by the doctor). Please let me know what your experiences are. Thx!

    positive TB test

I also had a positive TB skin test but this was because I had a BCG vaccine back in my country. I did not need to take any medications, all i needed was a chest x-ray showing that I did not have "active" disease.
check with your husband and see whether or not he had this vaccine, if he did he needs to let his doctor know so that he can have an x-ray done.

    Hope this helps!

My son took INH (isoniazid) when he was 2 for 6 months. he also didn't have T.B but the test was positive. his chest x ray showed no sign of the bacteria.I was worried to give INH to a young child knowing the fact that he doesn't have any t.b. He is born in India and was given BCG at birth. the doctor knew about it but still recommended INH for him to be on the safer side.

the medicine has to be taken regularly. during that time, my son always had upset stomach and he didn't gain as much weight as a normal 2 year old. In fact he lost weight. But I was releived for the fact that I was doing the right thing. I believe he had a checkup every month or every two months, I'm not sure.

after the 6 month course, in the doctor took the t.b test again and it was still positive. the doctor asked me if i gave the medicine for the full course and I said yes, then the doctor said, "the test might show positive for a quite sometime. it might take years to see the negative result. as long as you have given the medicine its fine." ever since then everytime i filled in preschool, kindergarten application, i wrote "t.b test positive-but treated" and he had no problem in getting into the school. we got our green card when he was four and we wrote the same thing and we didn't face any problems.

I dont know how it will affect the AOS process in your case. I'm thinking probably there wont be any problem as long as the applicant is taking treatment. I wouldn't know. But atleast you will have the peace of mind that you did what you had to do.
      Hope it helps.
